Years of wind, rain, and snow have taken their toll on our little workshop. Time to give it some much needed love.

Heating the train room properly.

The heat register in the train room has always been ineffective at heating the whole area. Even if it had a diverter it would still just warm one corner of the room as it faces downward instead of outward into the room. To fix this problem I am installing a new register on the vertical flat side.

While i was at it I also removed the shut off flap to the room upstairs as there has never been a reason to have it closed. The little bit extra in airflow would be welcomed as well.

Everything marked out and cutting the opening with a metal cutting blade.

Bending the fins so the air will be directed where I want it to go.
Before installing the cover I wiped out the duct-work as far as I could reach in both directions.
Picture
Installing the vent is simply done with two sheet metal screws.
Where the shut off flap was I will and some window and door caulking to the hole to seal it shut.
A touch up of paint and it is done. Now the whole room is heated instead of one corner! I cheap upgrade with great results!

making room for the trains Part 1

Clearing a storage room most of the way out, except for the Tardis console which I have to find another place for, the first thing that needs done is updating the sub-par  electrical and lights. There was a junction box where their should not have been one and a light fixture that did not have one. It all needed sorting out.

With such low ceilings the best option to not hit our heads was to used recessed cans with LEG bulbs.

Next it is drywall, taping and joint compound.

Lots of popped nails, paint drips, and tears to fix as well.

Heater hijinks

Had to fix a heater that had a bad exhaust motor. When this heater was installed the chimney did not have rain cap on it so some water got down the flu and started rusting out the motor and casing. Amazing what a twenty dollar piece of tin can prevent.

Cleaned up the unit and mating surfaces before putting on a new fire proof gasket between the casing and heat box as well.
Picture
I also replaced all the exhaust pipe that was showing signs of wear.
Works like new again!
